TKAM Post #4

Chapters 10-11
Perspective-Scout.
Dear Diary,
Lately, I've been really bummed. My daddy's old and doesn't do anything that all the other kids' daddy's do. They go fishin' and huntin' but my daddy, he just reads with his old glasses. We had gotten air rifles and wanted to go hunting. Daddy said he'd rather us shoot at tin cans in the backyard but he knows we'd go for birds anyway. He said go for any bird, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. I asked Miss Maudie why it was such a sin, and she told me it was because mockingbirds do no harm in this world, all they do is make nice melodies.
There be a dog we found, it ain't no ordinary dog. It's a mad dog. That dog is sick, he's ready to die. Jem called Calpurnia, and then she went n' got my daddy and Mr.Heck Tate. Mr Tate is the sheriff of this town, he gave my daddy the rifle and told him to take a shot at the dog. There my daddy went, he took a shot, and BAM! in the first shot the dog was gone. That's when Miss Maudie told me my daddy was known as "One-Shot Finch" I was so surprised and I was so glad I could finally be proud of my daddy.

Jem and I had been walking to daddy's work in the afternoon. I was carrying my baton, and we passed by Mrs. Dubose house. She sits in a wheel chair covered in blankets and shalls, we heard she hides a pistol under there. One day we'd been walking into town, as she greeted us with rude remarks, and at a point it got out of control, she said i'd be waiting on tables at the OK cafe, and that my daddy's in the courthouse lawing for niggers. She told us our daddy was no better than the niggers and trash he works for. That set Jem off, he cut the tops off of all her camellia bushes. His punishment was he had to read for her all the afternoons for a month.

I had went with him the first day he had to read to her. Her house was spooky, and different. When Jem read to her, if he skipped a word or a sentence, she would correct him right away, but as the days went on, nothing. He could skip a paragraph, it was as if she wasn't even listening. Later, we found out Mrs.Dubose is a morphine-addict. The nurse that takes care of her has an alarm, and she has the alarm set for one hour later every day. Every hour, she gives her morphine, but it's less and less eachtime. The reason for that was because Mrs.Dubose wanted to die drug-free. And as she requested, she did. I think it's been getting pretty hectic,

Sincerly,
Scout.
